Training on Investigating and Prosecuting Abusive Head Trauma

Responding to increasing numbers of reports of suspected abusive head trauma resulting in death or debilitating physical injury requires cooperation between medical, law enforcement, social services and legal professionals. While medical evidence and diagnosis play a critical role, law enforcement and social services personnel must conduct careful and thorough investigations.

The Niagara County Child Fatality Review Team is presenting Investigation and Prosecuting Abusive Head Trauma Cases on May 3, 2017 in Niagara Falls, New York.
              
Leigh Bishop, Chief of the Child Fatality Unit in the Queens County District Attorney’s Office is the featured presenter. Ms. Bishop has served as an Assistant District Attorney in Queens County for  20 years and has investigated and prosecuted all types of violent crime including homicide, rape, assault and robbery. She specializes in homicide and assault investigations and prosecutions involving infants and children with Abusive Head Trauma. She regularly advises prosecutors around the country on how to prepare Abusive Head Trauma cases for trial. She lectures on the investigation and prosecution of Abusive Head Trauma cases to law enforcement, pediatricians, pediatric specialists, social workers and defense attorneys.

This program will address a multidisciplinary response to abusive head trauma from start to finish including admissions and confessions in abusive head trauma cases. This training is recommended for law enforcement, child welfare, medical, prosecution and other professionals responding to suspected child abuse and will include case studies and a review of Niagara County processes.
