Child Fatality Review Team to welcome international expert for local training

The Niagara County Child Fatality Review Team is bringing an internationally recognized expert in Child Abuse Pediatrics here to train local professionals to recognize and respond to child abuse related fatalities.

lfrasierLori D. Frasier, M.D., director of the Penn State Hershey Center for the Protection of Children and chief of the Division of Child Abuse Pediatrics, will present “Child Abuse Recognition and Intervention: From Sentinel Events to Fatalities” to more than 100 local and regional law enforcement, child welfare, medical and victim advocacy professionals on Tuesday, June 7 at the Sheraton Niagara Falls.

Dr. Frasier completed her fellowship in Child Abuse Pediatrics at the University of Washington-Harborview Medical Center and her residency in Pediatrics at Seattle Children’s Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Frasier has also served as a professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Child Protection and Family Health at the University of Utah School of Medicine.

The Child Advocacy Center of Niagara, a service of Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, coordinates the Niagara County Child Fatality Review Team in partnership with the Niagara County Department of Social Services.

“Child abuse is the leading cause of death for children under the age of four,” said Child Advocacy Center Executive Director Ann Marie Tucker. “Responding to child fatalities is one of the greatest challenges for professionals in child protection, law enforcement, medical and advocacy roles. This training will provide the latest knowledge about child abuse recognition to these dedicated professionals.”

“Child fatality review results in a greater understanding of the risk factors related to child deaths,” said Niagara County Social Services Commissioner Anthony J. Restaino. “Skills in recognition and intervention ultimately help us to protect children. We are grateful for the opportunity to bring Dr. Frasier’s expertise to Niagara County.”

Tuesday’s program is supported by the Niagara County Department of Social Services and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.
